Recently I have been super busy. Apart from taking care of my ‘demanding family’, I am taking two graduate courses and preparing for my Guzheng exam. The exam is scheduled to take place on October 19. Multi-tasking is never easy. These days, I am still practicing the two songs every night. Hopefully I can have my best performance during the exam.
Here are some tips for memorizing sheet music:
- Memorizing sheet music is actually not that easy. I have spent three month trying to memorizing two songs. To date, I still occasionally make mistakes. Our brain has its limits, so don’t blame yourself when you make a mistake.
- You memorize a phone by phrases or sections. This is easier than trying to memorizing the entire song in one setting.
- Listen to other Guzheng players more frequently. This helps memorize the rhythm and beats.
- Memorize the notes first. Other notations can wait after you are fluent with the notes.
