Tips for playing “Drum Echos at the Temple Fair”

Summer holiday! I completed my sixth courses of my MBA about two weeks ago. Now I have free time and need to wait until mid-August to start my next class. Well, but I am not wasting my tie. I have already started preparing for my Level 6 CCOM Guzheng Exam scheduled for mid-October. This year I have chosen to play “Drum Echos at the Temple Fair” and “Heavenly Moon with Stars”. Currently, I am working on memorizing the sheet music. It’s really hard; when we get older, it’s harder to memorize things…

The middle section of “Drum Echos at the Temple Fair” is very difficult for me to memorize. Moreover, my other problem is that I have not been able to understand the mood needed to illustrate this song. I often play very fast, which really frustrates me! I came across an article about how play this song well. I’d like to use it as my reference material. Hopefully it will help me play better.

(The original article is only available in Chinese, but I will try translating some key points in English here.)

This song was composed in Shaanxi Qinzheng music style. The author is Professor Qu Yun. This song was written in 1980 and was rated as an excellent musical work at the 1983 Sixth Asian Music Forum. The music depicts the annual Temple Fair of Shaanxi Guanzhong. The melody of the deep and strong local style of Shaanxi shows the devout prayers of the pilgrims, the drumming bursts, sings and roars, and the rush of the crowds rushing into the mountains.

The prelude depicts the quietness of the mountains. The first section sets of the tone of the theme – slow and gentle just like the pilgrims’ prayers. Here, the finger technique we need to pay closer attention is “Pi” (the reverse of “Tuo”). Follow closely and use “Pi” wherever is notated on the sheet music. Also, when the tempo is show, trills can be performed instead of vibrato (trills require a larger degree of movement). Players should not play too fast here, but they should aim at playing clearly. This way, it makes a good contrast with the faster tempo in the later sections. For the second section where Tremolo (Yao Zhi) is needed, it depicts the illusory atmosphere of the mountains. Before transitioning to the third section, the speed increases. For the third section, it depicts people singing and the crowded scene at the Temple. For the end of the song, it includes some religious elements. It shows the festive atmosphere.

This song has some places that require a player’s left hand to press down two strings at the same time. If not done properly, it would destroy the cohesiveness of the song. When performing, pay attention to your arms to enable they are relaxed and your fingers can move swiftly.
