Guzheng Pick Storage Board

Guzheng Nail (Pick) storage board is not a frequently discussed topic. When I first started learning Guzheng, my first teacher taught me to stick my picks to my textbook and they can be used repeatedly for several times until the tape looses its adhesiveness. In recent years, Taobao sellers sell different kinds of products for organizing and storing Guzheng picks. Apart from mini purses and boxes, some sellers also sell storage boards. Since the shipping costs of Taobao products to Canada is not that cheap, also the size of many of those storage boards is too small to my taste. Since Taobao’s shipping rate to Canada is not cheap, and many of the storage boards sold on Taobao is too small to my taste, so two years ago I decided to make my own Guzheng pick storage board.

First I found a Canadian seller on a popular DIY website called “Etsy.com”.  The seller handmade and sold many  different kinds of wooden pieces. I asked him to help me build a 14×10-centimeter teak board. I also asked him to help me drill a hole, about four millimeters, on the board. Afterwards, I bought a copper-colored metal bead chain at ebay.ca ($1 USD) and bought one tribal feather earring from aliexpress.com.

Upcon receiving the teak board, I used my recent favourite, Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint (Graphite), to paint the board (because I didn’t like the original color of the teak wood very much) and then stenciled the board with French lilies in gold paint. After the paint was dry, I used Annie Sloan’s Soft Wax to help protect the board. The final step is to attach the feather to the metal bead chain and to the board. Done! It took time and money (it cost about $20 CDN), but I loved the board. It has been two years, and it still looks like new! The size is also perfect for me – sufficient space for my Guzheng picks 🙂

Wishing everyone Happy New Year!
