Today I’d like to briefly introduce this book: GuZheng Exam Level 1-6 (Central Conservatory of Music: overseas edition). If you live outside mainland China, as far as I know, most students need to use this book. For example, students in Hong Kong, Canada and the U.S. are required to use this book to take the annual Guzheng exam. If you want to take a Guzheng exam, you need to bring an authentic copy of the book; photocopy or pirated version is not accepted. This book usually can be purchased through the local examination authority, such as the Hong Kong Examinations Assessment Authority, B.C. Chinese Music Association… etc. I think it cost me about $30cdn (approx. of no more than $200hkd). The book is printed in traditional Chinese. The Hong Kong Examinations Assessment Authority can also mail it to places outside Hong Kong, so this gives some flexibility if you can’t purchase from a local examination authority.
The purpose of this book, I think, is mainly to help students pass the exam. Each level inside includes several exercises and songs. One thing you need to be aware of is that there are quite a number of printing errors in the book. You can watch videos of how others play, or ask your Guzheng teacher, in order to correct all the printing errors. At the end of each level, the book talks about the background of that level’s songs, as well as includes some basic music theory exercises.
I have been using this book for quite a book. If you search online, you can probably find videos of other Guzheng players playing some of the songs in this book. Ms. Cenxin Song, a famous Chinese Guzheng teacher, teaches an online course called “365 Online Guzheng”. Some of her lessons explain how to play some of the songs in this book. You may wish to check her lessons out to help you understand.
This book has covered a variety of basic and intermediate techniques, such as double octaves and arpeggios. If you are self learning Guzheng, maybe give this book a try!
