Guzheng nails and tapes are two necessities to Guzheng players. There are many thickness, colour and styles in the market available for purchase. However, when buying Guzheng tapes, based on my experience, the level of stickiness is the single most important consideration. My hands sweat a lot; therefore, my tape gets loose quite easily. In the past, when I purchased Guzheng supplies from Taobao (a Chinese shopping site similar to eBay), many sellers gave me lots of Guzheng tapes as gifts. All of them have the same packaging – packed in the same plastic bag. However, what I discovered was that not all of them have the same level of stickiness. Some of them were so bad quality that I had to throw them away after one or two uses. Some of them were of superior quality – I could use one piece continuously for an entire month for 30 days! Currently, I live in North America. Usually I buy my tapes from Amazon.ca. Every time, I purchase four rolls of tape (10 metres in total). The stickiness is quite good – I only need to replace my tape weekly. The four rolls are sufficient for me for eight to nine months.
The texture of common Guzheng tape is more or less like a fabric Band-Aid. However, there are actually some made of paper. My mom bought me some paper-made Guzheng tape before in Hong Kong (approximately $10 HKD per roll). It is cheaper than the fabric tape. Although I have not tried the paper tape yet, I think my sweaty hands can destroy it easily… Let me try it this Christmas and share with you my experience afterwards.
